Period of time when the District will not permit an individual into a school building. When an individual is excluded as a result of a health concern, the signs and symptoms that are reported or assessed may be correlated to a contagious illness. 

Period of time defined by the health department when people are asked to stay home and avoid contact with others who are healthy to any extent possible, because they have been diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19; 10 days from onset of symptoms AND at least 24 hours of improvement in symptoms and being fever free without the use of medication.

Period of time defined by the health department when people are asked to stay home and avoid contact with others because they may have been exposed to COVID but are not yet showing symptoms. Because someone can spread COVID-19 before they have symptoms, quarantine stops them from accidentally spreading the virus to other healthy people.

The time from exposure to a germ to development of illness; COVID-19 symptoms may appear in 2 to 14 days after contact with someone who has COVID-19.

• Direct physical contact (hug, handshake, high five, etc.) OR 

• In the same room of indoor or outdoor location for greater than 15 minutes when less than 6 feet apart
  
  - OR -  

• Anyone with direct contact of respiratory secretions (coughed on, sneezed on, or coming into direct contact with saliva, touching dirty kleenex) of an individual diagnosed with COVID-19
  
  - OR - 

• Staying overnight for at least one night with the person

Your child will be excluded from school (including sports/activities) and would be placed in isolation by the health department until ALL of the following:

• 10 days since symptoms first appeared

• At least 24 hours of improvement in symptoms and being fever free without the use of medication and feeling well

• A date for clearance to return to activities is provided to FPS by the Franklin Health Department

We anticipate that students and staff will have exposures to COVID-19 that will result in orders from the health department to quarantine at home.

• If your child meets the definition of a “close contact” to someone with COVID-19 and has not been vaccinated, your child will not be permitted to attend school (including sports/activities) and would be placed in self-quarantine in collaboration with the health department.
• If your child meets the definition of a “close contact” to someone with COVID-19 and has been vaccinated, your child will not be required to quarantine but we ask that you please monitor for symptoms up to 14-days from exposure.  

Working in collaboration with the Franklin Health Department and following guidance from the CDC and the WI Department of Health Services, the district will notify families in the situation of a close contact about timelines for quarantine. 

This document from the WI Dept of Health Services gives guidance for those that are deemed a close contact to someone with COVID-19.

• If your child is able to isolate away from the sick individual (physically separating and having no contact or not sharing a bathroom with the ill person), the child should quarantine a minimum of 10 days if no symptoms are present, but up to 14 days the day after the last contact.

• If unable to fully separate, the isolation period (at least 10 days) for the individual with COVID-19 must be completed prior to the quarantine beginning. 

Please keep your child home if they are not feeling well. Your child will be considered to have suspected COVID-19 if they are displaying the following symptoms. 

If your child displays:

• ONE of the following symptoms: Fever of 100.4 or higher or chills, New cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, New loss of taste or smell

- OR -

• TWO or more of the following:  Diarrhea, Nausea or vomiting, New loss of taste or smell, Headache, Muscle or body aches, Fatigue, Congestion or runny nose, Sore throat

Your child would not be permitted to participate in school (including any sports/activities) until:

• 10 days since symptoms first appear AND at least 24 hours of improvement in symptoms and being fever free without the use of medication

- OR -

• They test negative for COVID-19, submit proof of a negative test result, AND improvement in symptoms being fever free without the use of medication 

- OR -

• There is documented evidence by a medical provider clearing your child’s return as a result of diagnosis with another illness that would account for similar symptoms.

Currently, it is the recommendation that anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 get tested.  More information can be found here.  Contact your primary care provider, as they may be able to assist you getting tested or may have a recommendation location for testing.  

It is true that those in close contact with an individual who develops symptoms of or tests positive for COVID-19 will still need to quarantine at the direction of the health department regardless of whether or not they were wearing a mask. However, mask wearing will decrease the likelihood of contracting the virus, as they will prevent droplets containing the virus from being projected into the air when the person with COVID-19 coughs, talks, or breathes and will provide protection to those wearing masks.

If the number of students and staff that need to be quarantined or isolated increases, we may get to a point where a classroom, school, multiple schools or the district has to close. The local health department determines who is quarantined and for how long.  The district continues to monitor various metrics to help make this determination.  

CDC and DHS recommendations for schools is that 3-feet social distancing for schools be implemented as often as possible.

The physical makeup of our classrooms and the number of students per class will not allow for every student to be 3-feet apart from each other at all times.  We will socially distance students to extent we are able.  

We will focus our efforts on universal precautions like having students contained to group cohorts, scheduled surface cleaning, hand washing when in close contact with others.

Our mechanical contractor has verified that our equipment is  exchanging the appropriate amount of air. We are also setting our unit schedules to continue to exchange air into the evening when students and staff have left for the day. We have increased our MERV filter rating and will increase filter change intervals.

Good hygiene habits, such as hand-washing have always been a part of the school day. Staff will continue to promote this habit.

For the 2021-22 school year, we will not have assigned seats at lunch for students.  We will continue to make efforts to distance students where possible.
