CD Smith & Students working on masonry

Students in the Franklin High School Construction II course, led by instructor Andrew Mente, are gaining valuable real-world experience in January and February by working alongside construction professionals from our high school referendum project partner, CD Smith.  Together, students and CD Smith professionals are creating new dugouts and a press box for the Saber Baseball Field, as part of the facility improvements under the 2024 Referendum. This type of work is a meaningful tribute to the community investing in not only our facilities, but in helping hands-on learning like this to occur for our students.

The project began with an introduction and skills evaluation led by Zach Theobald, Mason Superintendent with CD Smith, who shared his career path in the masonry trade and assessed students’ existing knowledge. From there, students have been learning key masonry skills such as brick blending, understanding bond types, proper coursing for accurate elevations, and the use of reinforcement, control joints, and flashing systems.

This week, students are receiving hands-on instruction in laying 8-inch block--setting to a line, properly using a trowel, managing mortar, and maintaining clean, professional work. This partnership provides students with authentic, career-connected learning while directly contributing to Franklin High School facilities.
