Ben Franklin Information

We are happy that your child(ren) will be attending our school.  Here are a few of our guidelines that will help inform you about procedures at Ben Franklin.

In Our Office:  Our principal is Ms. Sarah Edbauer.  The school secretary is Mrs. Sue Behrens.  The office staff is Mrs. Melissa Braun in the morning and Mrs. Janel Oberheu in the afternoon.  The school phone number is 414-529-8270 and Fax number is 414-529-8274.

School Hours:  Ben Franklin School hours are 9:10 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.  The doors open for the students at 9:00 a.m. Office hours are 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Communication:  A weekly bulletin is emailed every Friday at 1:00 p.m. with important school information. All report cards and test results are emailed with secure delivery, which requires your child’s PowerSchool Number to access. Our District is trying to go paperless, so the majority of communication will be done via email.

Parent Drop off and Pick up - Go to:   BF drop off and pick up procedures   for information regarding the dismissal procedures for your student.  At the Open House on Thursday, each teacher will ask you to confirm your plans for your child.  We are always so careful about dismissal, particularly at the beginning of the school year! IF there’s a change for the day and we do not receive communication FROM THE PARENT, either via a hand-written note or email, the teacher will follow the confirmed information received.  The ONLY time the office should receive a phone call to change the pick-up arrangements for your child should be in an emergency situation.  We understand that emergencies do arise.

Attendance/Absences:  Whenever a student will not be in school as scheduled, the office must be notified so that accurate attendance records can be kept.  Good student attendance is absolutely crucial to your child's learning at school. Please try to schedule medical appointments and vacations during unscheduled school time.

On the day of the absence:  When your child will not be attending school or will be late, please call 529-8270 before 8:00 A.M. and leave a complete message including:

1) student’s name  

2)  room number or teacher name

3) reason for absence or delayed arrival time.

For your convenience, the school does have an automated attendant to provide you the opportunity to leave a message before and after school hours and when our phone lines are busy during the school day.  To access the attendance line, dial 1 after reaching the automated attendant.

For pre planned absences of a full day or more, please submit the Absence, Prearranged Student Release Form. 

Health Room/ Illness:  If a student becomes ill or has a physical injury while at school, he/she may be sent to the Student Health Room. Upon arrival their symptoms are assessed by the School Secretary or Educational Assistant. All have been trained by the Red Cross through the school district to provide basic care.

For illness, the student's temperature is taken and rest time is provided. If his / her temperature exceeds 100 F, we will contact a parent to send the student home. Children with symptoms such as fever over 100, diarrhea, vomiting, sore throat, rashes, red draining eyes, etc. must stay home for 24 hours after these symptoms are over.  

If a student has sustained an injury due to a fall, we will treat the injury by immobilizing it and applying ice, if the student expresses intense pain, a parent will be contacted. We do not hesitate to call the Franklin Fire Department Rescue Squad for seriously injured or ill students.

Please note: We attempt to be very observant of the physical well being of your child(ren), however, we do rely on them to communicate their problems to us.

Medications:  According to School Board Policy, in order for your child to be allowed to take ANY medication (including over-the-counter) during school hours, the "Request to Administer Medication" form must be completed each school year for each prescribed medication and be on file in the school office.  This written request form must include a signature of the parent or guardian as well as the printed name and signature of the physician for the prescribed medication(s). All medications must be provided to the school in their original containers and be properly labeled.  At no time shall any student keep any medications in his/her possession, locker or desk, or self-administer medications without proper authorization as documented on the "Request to Administer Medication" form. Students are prohibited from distributing or sharing any type of medication.

Early Dismissal and Appointments:  Students may be excused during school hours for medical and dental appointments. If a valid early dismissal is necessary, please send a signed note to your child's teacher stating the date and time your child will be out of class. The student should present it to the teacher at the beginning of the day. Only emergency situations should be handled over the telephone. When possible, please try to notify the teacher a day or two in advance of the absence.

Parents or guardians must come into the school office to sign out their child(ren) when they leave early.  These procedures are followed to provide for the safety and security of all of our students.

 We strongly discourage an early dismissal at the end of the day, unless it is for an appointment and we receive a note in the morning. Taking your child out of school, even a few minutes early, is very disruptive. It also compromises the safety of all students.

Volunteer Background Checks:  All individuals that would like to volunteer in the classroom, participate in a classroom activity, or gain access to the building during school hours must have a current background check on file. Click on the Volunteer & School Access Background Check Form  and turn into the school office upon completion. 

School Bus Rules:  Please review the School Bus Rules with your student(s).  

School Messenger:  School Messenger is the district’s emergency phone and email messaging system that will be used to inform parents of emergencies, school closings and other time sensitive information. The system’s contact information is generated from PowerSchool.  More than one number from a student’s account will be dialed in an emergency; routine calls will only be sent to home phone lines.

Ben Franklin Lunch/Recess Schedule:  

Kindergarten & First Grade   11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Second & Third Grade  12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Fourth & Fifth Grade  12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
