FHS Spread the Word to End the Word
Franklin High School students participated in an announcement regarding Spread the Word to End the Word on March 4th, 5th and 6th. March 6th people around the world unite their communities to Spread the Word to End the Word as supporters participate in the 5th Annual Spread the Word to End The Word Awareness Day aiming at ending the hurtful use of the R-word which negatively impacts people with developmental disabilities. Language affects attitudes. Attitudes impact actions. Special Olympics and Best Buddies encourage people all over the world to pledge now to use respectful language and build communities of respect and inclusion for all people. We requested FHS to sign a banner this week in the cafeteria to support Spread the Word to End the Word. It is an ongoing effort created by students with and without disabilities to eliminate the use of the "R" word to create communities of respect.

Three FHS Seniors were selected as National Merit Scholarship Program finalists! (Emma Klein, Jeff Roettgen, and Kirsten Pelkey)
Out of nearly 1.5 million college bound juniors that took the PSAT last fall, approximately 15,000 students were selected as Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program (about 1%).
This year, three FHS students were selected as Finalists and in March will be notified if they are one of 8,300 National Merit Scholarship winners.

FHS Students attended a Screenwriting program
Eight FHS students, Jamie Mercado, Erin Neuhengen, Taylor St. Onge, Joe Stefanczyk, Katie Theel, Evan Watters, Elizabeth Zingsheim, and Brandon Klein, were chosen to participate in the first workshop of the Milwaukee Film Collaborative Cinema Screenwriting program. There were over 300 submissions by high school students in the Milwaukee area. The 50 students were chosen to participate in an all day work shop on Saturday, January 26th at the UW-Milwaukee Film School. They learned how to write a short screenplay and met with professional mentors for advice. The students turned in a short screenplay and met with mentors again for revisions. The final screenplay will be chosen, produced in the summer and submitted to film festivals around the country. Outstanding work!
