District Evaluates Grading Practices
Dear Franklin Public Schools Parent,
As a district we have embarked on a journey to improve upon our grading practices in terms of informing students about their learning in ways that better meet their needs as learners. We have formed a Grading For Learning Committee that consists of teachers from all levels and content areas/grade levels, parents from all levels, a school board member, and all principals. This district-wide committee was formed in the spring of 2012 after extending an invitation to staff and parents. Our work in the area of grading began last school year and over the summer when we studied the most current and best practices in grading from several experts in the field. We are excited as we begin the staff development piece of this grading practices work that will ultimately result in grading practices that are more reflective of student learning and grade reporting that will provide clearer indicators of student learning.
In order to better inform you of the work that is going on, you can always visit the Grading For Learning website at: https://sites.google.com/site/fpsgrading/. On this website you will find our vision for grading practices, meeting minutes and agendas, online resources, and an area to provide feedback to the committee. It is our goal to keep you as informed as possible on this very important shift. We are also going to provide you with some parent informational sessions that will contain some general information about this work, as well as some time to ask some questions that apply to your son/daughter’s specific grade level. The following sessions will follow a World Cafe format which will allow you to hear a summary of the work that is being done, as well as time for you to respond to some overarching questions that will impact you, as parents and your son/daughter, as a student.
Please mark the applicable date on your calendar and join us as we move forward with student learning through grading practices that truly reflect what the student learns and not just what he/she earns.
