Forest Park Hosts Groundbreaking for New Building
On June 28, 2017, the Board of Education, students, the Mayor and members of our educational community gathered to break ground on the New Forest Park Middle School site. The brief ceremony included remarks from District Administrator Dr. Judy Mueller, Board President Janet Evans and Mayor Steve Olson. Students from the District’s elementary schools were also in attendance to represent the first 6th grade class that will attend in the new facility.
The new building has a 2-story layout and is planned to accommodate 1,350 students at full capacity, serving students in grades 6-8.
Site work is scheduled to take place in September. In fall, foundations and footings are expected to be poured before winter weather hits. The current tentative construction schedule would have the building complete and fully occupied with Grades 6-8 in September 2019.
In November 2016, a community referendum to build a new Forest Park Middle School for grades 6-8 passed with 52% of the vote. See results here.
Franklin Public School District would like to extend its gratitude to all of the community members, parents, and staff members who provided input for the Forest Park referendum by taking surveys, attending meetings and events, voting, and contacting the district for more information. The involvement of the district community was an essential component of the referendum planning and its success.
The construction project to build a new Forest Park Middle School is currently in its design and development stage. Preparations are underway to prepare the site for the new building, including taking soil bearings to ensure the site is prepared to handle the weight of the structure.
Based on staff feedback and input from District leadership, preliminary floor plans and exterior elevation plans have been designed. The Board of Education reviewed these concepts at their April 12th and April 26th meetings. Videos from those meetings can be viewed on the Board Meeting Videos page.
The new building has a 2-story layout and is planned to accommodate 1,350 students at full capacity, serving students in grades 6-8. The building is being designed to compliment the surrounding neighborhood and include ample green space. The new Forest Park will have a secure entry and flexible and appropriate learning environments to best serve our students’ educational needs. The site will have a two-lane traffic flow, with separate bus and parent drop off areas for safety and efficiency.
Groundbreaking and site work are scheduled to begin as the 2016-17 school year concludes. Foundations and footings expected to be poured in early fall 2017. The current tentative construction schedule would have the building complete and fully occupied with Grades 6-8 in September 2019.
Shortly after the Forest Park Middle School referendum question passed in the fall election, the District started the process of planning for the new building. Members of the architectural team hosted several interviews with current Forest Park staff to gain insight on how the new building can best support curriculum delivery. District representatives also toured other local schools that have recently been built.
A site survey was completed to identify any environmental factors that the project must consider as it moves forward. The project is currently in its design and development phase. District leadership meets with the construction and architectural teams every two weeks to develop and refine a building design and floor plan that will best support the educational needs of our middle school students and staff.
The next months will be occupied with completing and finalizing the design for the new building. Ground will be broken on the new site this summer after school is out. The current tentative construction schedule would have the building complete and fully occupied with Grades 6-8 in September 2019.
